The Furukawa-cho Shopping Arcade, the starting point for this tour, was historically a focal point for traffic into Kyoto from the east. The tour starts with a taste of Kyoto at a local cafe next to the scenic Shirakawa River. Walking upstream, and you will come to a holy shrine, dedicated to the safe passage of travelers, veiled in a blanket of green. Looking out on the amazing view from there, you will forget about the bustle of the city below.
Later, you will pass through a great temple gate and climb a grand stone staircase that looks as though it might reach the heavens, only to be whisked into a spiritual world. The Higashiyama area is famous for its many temples and their beautiful seasonal scenery, but you will also be pleased to find many things in the everyday lives of Kyoto residents hidden here that will pique your interest. This tour will not only uncover these many hidden treasures, but also give you an inside look at history and Japanese lifestyles.
Join us on this tour through Kyoto and see beyond the surface.
